Chilton Home

History:
The Chilton Home is located at 709 College Street.
Thomas Chilton was born on July 30th, 1798. He was a U.S Representative. He lived in the Chilton House until his death in 1854. He was also the first full-time pastor at Montgomery Baptist Church.
David Dean bought the home in the 1880's. He built the white picket fence around the house in the 1890's, from heart pine cut in his mill.
In 1984, Gregory Hudson bought the house. He restored it, and lived in the house while he was mayor of Montgomery.
Then in 1996, it became a bed and breakfast for 4 years until it was bought in 2000 by Fred and Betty Harvey. Since then, the Harvey's have lived in the house.

On December 28th, 1868, members of the Jesse James Gang rode into Montgomery. Bob Oliver, (one of the members) stole a horse from the Cartwright boys. The Cartwright boys followed Bob to where his mom was renting a room at the Chilton Home. They said if he came out, the Cartwright boys won't shoot Bob. They kept their promise, but they stabbed him instead. Bob died under a bed at the Chilton home. His bloodstains can still be found on the floor.

After all of this ended, all 4 Jesse James Gang members were dead. They weren't permitted to go into a cemetery where all the good people were. As a result, a new cemetery was started for the Jesse James Members on Old Plantersville Road called "New Montgomery Cemetery". 3/4 of the bodies were put to rest. The exact place of where the 4th body is located, is currently unknown.
